Baie des Trésors : a new vision of agricultural rum

Treasure Bay. It gave its name to an eponymous brand that offers single-plot and vintage rums with personalized aging.

Latest edition : 04 November 2024

At the end of the Caravelle peninsula, in the heart of nature, lies a superb wild and preserved bay: Since 1849, the Exploitation Agricole du Galion has been growing sugar cane. With nearly 750 hectares, it is the leading cane producer in Martinique. In 2021, it created a new brand of great rums, Baie des Trésors, which benefits from the precious AOC Martinique label.
The volcanic lands of the Caravelle peninsula on the east coast of the island are ideal for growing sugar cane but also have very diverse characteristics. Between wetlands and dry areas, more or less exposed to the wind, the rums made from these sugar canes offer completely different profiles. Some are opulent and sweet, others drier and subtler. Plot-based cultivation is therefore a natural choice.
Baie des Trésors Works in a "winegrower" way, that is to say that its rums are both plot and vintage. Martinique offers very diverse landscapes, forged by relief, winds, rains or proximity to the volcano. These landscapes shape the terroirs and condition agriculture. Rather than mixing these different identities, bay of treasures distinguishes them to highlight all the expressions of rum.
In order for the rums to express their full potential, they benefit from aging adapted to their qualities. It is a complex and global process that starts with the cane and extends to the choice of barrels, the aging time and the type of cellar (dry or humid).
Like the great wines, each rum is subject to custom aging. Only small 250-liter barrels are used, a large proportion of which are new. American or French oak are used in turn, each bringing its own special touch to the fusion between rum and wood.
Finally, just like wine, Baie des Trésors rums are vintage because each year is different and gives the canes aromas typical of the climatic conditions of the vintage. Today, the Baie des Trésors collection is composed of 4 rums including 3 aged rums, divided between dry zones (Plein Soleil, Fleurs du Vent and Karakoli) and humid zones (Fruits des Pluies).

Plein Soleil 2022

Coming from the Fond Basile plot, swept by the trade winds and exposed to the sun all day, Plein Soleil white rum is a great introduction to understanding the Baie des Trésors approach.
Thus, the Fond Basile plot is characterized by its aridity. Coupled with the choice of a perfectly adapted cane variety, it allows to obtain a remarkable concentration that is found in white rum, after adapted distillation and reduction.
The Plein Soleil 2022 white rum fully expresses its terroir and surprises with its complexity, between delicacy and liveliness.
Nose: Lively and fresh, dominated by notes of lemon, freshly cut cane and dried cane.
Mouth : A rounded attack then a pronounced character of citrus fruits, floral and exotic notes.
Tasting: Alone or on ice. As a cocktail, keep it simple with a traditional ti-punch: 60 ml of Plein Soleil rum, 1 lime juice, 1 tsp of cane sugar.

 Karakoli 2020

At the end of the Caravelle peninsula, overlooking the Baie du Trésor, Pointe Caracoli is an emblematic cape of Martinique. The easternmost point, this is where the first rays of the sun caress the coasts of the flower island.Coming from the dry plot of Spoutourne and from a 2020 vintage which was itself very dry and hot in Martinique (one of the driest vintages of the last 70 years), Karakoli expresses all the richness of this unique terroir.
Nose: delicate woody and balsamic notes, enhanced by a pleasant iodized hint. Aromas of dried coconut, notes of white port, hot caramelized sugar, candied orange and ginger. Evolution towards notes of dried flowers, blond tobacco, incense, cloves and saffron. Touches of white chocolate and nougat are added at the bottom of the glass with nuances of pepper and cinnamon.
Mouth: supple and fat attack, with a very balanced structure marked by supple and pleasant tannins. The long finish offers floral, balsamic, and roasted aromas.
Tasting: Alone or on ice.

Alcohol abuse is dangerous for health. To consume with moderation.
