Ancient theater
Below Mont Pipet, the impressive ancient theater of Vienne forms a hemicycle leaning against the hill. Its construction began in the 1st century and it could accommodate over 11,000 spectators, making it one of the largest in the Roman world, the second in Gaul after Autun. The importance of the Roman city was such that a second, smaller theater was built nearby.
It was rediscovered in 1908. Currently, 46 bleachers accommodate about 8000 spectators. Since its restoration, it has been THE theater in Vienna, hosting many shows including the prestigious jazz festival.
