The Monsaraz region is rich in superlatives: the village of Sao Pedro do Corval is reputed to be the largest pottery center in the country! The clay deposits deliver the raw material, the craftsmen pass on their know-how from generation to generation.
With about twenty workshops, there is something for all tastes and all uses, from utilitarian containers to works of art, including bowls and plates with traditional or contemporary decorations!
The workshops are also open to visitors: from the preparation of the clay, the shaping by hand, the assembly on the lathe, the decoration, the whole process is shown and proves that San Pedro do Corval is not a " tourist trap”.
Near the village of potters, the convent of Our Lady of Orada (convento de Nossa Senhora da Orada) 18th century is well worth a photo stop.
