From the moment we arrived at the König Ludwig, one thing was certain: Scandinavian minimalism wasn't the style we were looking for here! In our small suite, chandeliers sparkled on the ceiling, a small sauna offered a view of the outdoors, and the interior decidedly embraced a "royal" feel. A touch of luxury that, let's face it, was rather welcome.

In the corridors, two authentic dresses belonging to Sissi attract attention. They are there to be admired, not to be touched of course.

So I carefully slipped behind one of them to realize that, decidedly, I wouldn't have made a very good empress: much too tall and, incidentally, a bit plump! My husband wasn't much more convincing posing behind the ceremonial uniform...
Perhaps it's this blend that gives the König Ludwig its charm. There's something theatrical about it, but always combined with a certain elegance and a contemporary spirit. And, unexpectedly, it made me want to dress up for dinner that evening. It's been a long time since a hotel has had that effect on me!
The dining room where we eat also plays up the castle theme, perhaps a little too much for my taste. On the other hand, I really appreciate the table service: no constant back and forth to the buffets, the atmosphere remains peaceful. And I enjoyed what's on my plate, of course!

“ We work with high-quality regional products, placing paramount importance on seasonality and provenance. At the same time, we want to show our customers that mindful eating doesn't mean deprivation. For years, I've been passionate about what are known as the 'Blue Zones'—regions of the world where people enjoy exceptional longevity and excellent health. Natural foods, quality ingredients, and mindful eating play a central role there. These concepts inspire our cuisine, without becoming dogmatic. After all, holidays should first and foremost be about enjoyment, ” says Florian Lingenfelder, who took over the establishment founded by his parents.

My real favorite spot is the bar, which is decidedly more contemporary. Its enormous chandelier catches the eye, but it's the view that truly captivates me: the ponds, the meadows, and, in the distance, the mountains. A place where you could easily linger.
And then there's breakfast, served in bright rooms. The selection of fresh fruit is impressive and immediately makes you want to linger. And that's the point!
"We offer our clients time."
When the young owner joined the family business in 2007, he returned from professional experiences in New York, Florence, and Zurich. These experiences profoundly shaped his vision of the hotel industry. For him, true luxury is not an accumulation of outward signs, but rather the attention paid to others, the personality of a place, and the feeling of being genuinely valued.
His parents had created the establishment with the idea of a sports-oriented hotel. He gradually wanted to broaden this approach. At the time, wellness was often limited to a sauna and a few massages. Today, he believes, expectations have changed: fatigue is also mental, and the burden of daily life sometimes weighs more heavily than physical exertion.
The spa's expansion marked an important step in this evolution. Movement, gastronomy, regeneration, but also vast spaces where everyone can find their own rhythm: the König Ludwig now aims to take care of the person in their entirety.
His motto sums up this philosophy quite well: "We don't just rent rooms, we offer our clients time."
On the estate's approximately 50,000 square meters, everyone is invited to do as they please with this newfound free time. Gardens, natural swimming lakes, a spa, and numerous quiet spaces offer opportunities for strolling, swimming, pampering, or... simply doing nothing.
And this last choice is certainly not considered a waste of time. On the contrary. In our lives where everything must be programmed, decided, optimized, the greatest luxury may well have become that of having nothing to do.
“Our goal is not to multiply the offers, but to find the ideal combination of movement, regeneration and rest for each client. We focus on the individual approach. Each client has their own unique needs .”
A break without children
This philosophy also explains the choice, quite bold at the time, to reserve the establishment for adults.
The owner is a father himself. He knows how wonderful family holidays can be. But he also knows how rare it has become for adults to have a few days entirely to themselves.

The choice sparked some controversy, but he embraces it as a different approach rather than a rejection of the family-friendly model. Hotels that welcome children have their place; the König Ludwig has chosen to cater to a different expectation: that of absolute tranquility. "We wanted to create a place where absolute peace and quiet is possible; not because children are a nuisance, but because we wanted to focus entirely on the needs of adult guests."
And clearly, the formula is a hit. The clientele remains predominantly made up of 45-65 year olds, but more and more young adults are also coming to seek this peaceful break, aware that relaxation and health are not concerns reserved for one generation.
Many guests return regularly. Some have known the hotel for years and have witnessed its transformations. Germans, Austrians, and Swiss make up the bulk of the clientele, gradually joined by visitors from the Benelux countries and other European nations.
In the name of the king
The exceptional setting alone would be enough to justify the trip: the Allgäu Alps, the lakes, and the proximity of Neuschwanstein Castle. Just like the hotel with its regal name, for that matter.

Regarding "King Ludwig": What does Florian Lingenfelder think of this controversial king, a fairytale king or a mad king?

“I consider Louis II first and foremost a visionary. Many of his ideas were not understood during his lifetime. Today, his castles are among the most famous monuments in Europe and shape the image of our region worldwide. I admire his courage in having a grand vision and forging his own path. Of course, historical figures must always be placed within the context of their time. For us, however, King Louis embodies above all creativity, aesthetics, and the will to create something exceptional. We see the fact that our hotel bears his name as a tribute to our region and its history .”
A smiling and detail-oriented owner, a magnificent environment, and the spirit of a legendary king: this is the promise of a royal stay where you finally allow yourself the time to do nothing.
