Baiersbronn, hiking for the pleasure of all the senses

Welcome to the "Baiersbronner Wanderhimmel," literally the "Baiersbronn hiking heaven." A fitting name for a region offering over 550 kilometers of marked trails, nestled in the heart of the wild and bountiful Black Forest.
Baiersbronn doesn't try to compete with the picture-postcard mountain villages with their impeccably flower-adorned houses. Its charm lies elsewhere: in the vastness of its forests, its valleys, its clearings, its peaks, and the pleasant feeling of truly being immersed in nature.

The municipality encompasses nine villages and stretches for about twenty kilometers. In other words, there's plenty of walking to do! The routes are as varied as your desires and fitness level: short family walks, accessible paths, therapeutic trails, or multi-day hikes. My favorites? The nine "Himmelswege," the "Sky Trails," which wind their way in a loop to beautiful viewpoints.

Happiness is at the end of the path

Being a foodie, the four "pleasure trails," those famous certified Genießerpfade that make hiking a truly immersive experience, are obviously on our itinerary. Between 11 and 14 kilometers (you do need to be in good physical condition), beautiful natural paths, panoramic views, clearings where you'd love to linger… and, above all, mountain huts.

Because here, the refuge isn't simply a place to stop for a drink after climbing a slope. It becomes a destination in itself. And when you know that a genuine "Grinde" ham, fresh trout from the Buhlbach, or goat's cheese flavored with wild oregano awaits you, the last few kilometers suddenly seem much shorter!

I also discovered a forest honey ice cream with spruce tips. The name alone makes you want to try it. And that's precisely the spirit of Baiersbronn: to offer a different way to experience the Black Forest, engaging all the senses.
Twelve mountain huts welcome hikers in the region and in the neighboring Murg Valley. Some have remained true to the traditional tavern atmosphere; others are resolutely embracing creativity.

When shelters change eras

The Glasmännlehütte, perched atop the Stöckerkopf, Baiersbronn's iconic peak, is one such place. Vera Mühl and Hannes Gaiser have completely renovated this historic mountain hut and breathed new life into it. People come here to eat, of course, but also to practice yoga outdoors, attend a reading or concert, watch a film under the stars, participate in a sunset evening… or even sing karaoke!

"Our shelter should not be a simple place to stop, but a true meeting place," explain its young managers.

Even the cuisine is unconventional. Committed vegetarians, they have chosen to completely banish animal products. Instead of the traditional mountain snack, hikers enjoy creative pinsas (a type of flatbread), homemade cakes, and dishes prepared with regional ingredients.
"It's a bit of a change," smiles Christina Palma Diaz, director of the tourist office. And that's precisely what makes Baiersbronn so charming: here, tradition doesn't stifle inventiveness.

Stars in the mountain huts

The surprises don't end there. In Baiersbronn, even the star-rated hotels have their own mountain huts! The "Panoramahütte" at the Hotel Sackmann, the "Blockhütte" at the Traube Tonbach, the "Forellenhof Buhlbach," and the "Sattelei" at the Hotel Bareiss offer the chance to savor the region's renowned cuisine, right in the heart of the mountains. Here, the interiors aren't rustic but rather more elegant, which doesn't detract from their welcoming atmosphere.

The Panoramahütte, owned by the Hotel Sackmann, sits on a sunny terrace overlooking the Murg Valley. It's reached via one of the gourmet trails, and once you arrive, the choice isn't necessarily any easier than the journey itself: traditional snacks, Baden and Swabian specialties, raclette, or barbecue, depending on the season.
Sarah and Daniel Sackmann themselves say that these mountain huts extend the culinary experience of their hotels into the mountains.

And ultimately, that's perhaps what I love about Baiersbronn. Here, you don't just walk to get somewhere. You walk to look, to breathe, to be amazed, to stop… and sometimes to give in to temptation. A hike that ends around a good meal, facing the mountains—what a wonderful reward!
