Das Achental, golf, nature, and gastronomy: the perfect trifecta

In Grassau, in the foothills of the Chiemgau Alps, balconies overflow with flowers. Even in the hotels. Inside, wood is everywhere, the spaces are vast and bright, and the bouquets almost look as if they were picked from the garden before our arrival. Nothing cold or overly sophisticated. It's simply welcoming.

That's probably what I liked most about it: despite the size of the establishment, you never feel like you're in a large hotel complex. The atmosphere is more like a beautiful home where everyone can find their own little favorite spot. A sunny terrace, a comfortable armchair, the spa, the restaurant… or simply a place to watch the hours go by.

The owners, Ursula Schelle-Müller and Dieter Müller, have found a lovely phrase to summarize their philosophy: "Chiemgau Pur". In other words, to bring the region into the hotel and not try to erase it behind standardized luxury.

The materials are natural, local products are favored, and the service is warm and unpretentious.

t's a concept of luxury that suits me perfectly: having space, time, and the feeling that no one is trying to impress us.

The place was once an equestrian center. Today, it has become a true paradise for those who love to be active… but also for those who have decided to do absolutely nothing. Golf, tennis, football, hiking, spa: there's plenty to fill a day. Or several. But no one will blame you for preferring a sun lounger.

Golf is undoubtedly one of the main attractions in Das Achental. The 18-hole championship course draws enthusiasts, while the "PGA Premium Golf School by Simon Hangel" offers the opportunity to perfect your swing. Personally, I'd be more tempted by a stroll through the surrounding countryside before returning to my table in the evening.

Because here, fine dining isn't a secondary activity. It's the main reason to come. The es:senz restaurant, run by Edip Sigl, boasts three Michelin stars. This distinction places it among the most prestigious restaurants in Germany. But you can also choose Alpine cuisine at Weissen Hirsch, Mediterranean flavors at Vinothek, or a much more relaxed atmosphere at Seehütte10, located right on the golf course.

And then there is another address to discover, just a few kilometers away: the Chiemgauhof – Lakeside Retreat.

There, the atmosphere changes. The owners had the incredible opportunity to acquire a property located directly on the shores of Lake Chiemsee. After a spectacular transformation, it has become an elegant and contemporary retreat, designed in collaboration with the Milanese architect Matteo Thun.

Here, there's no need to overdo it. The lake is there, immense, and the mountains are visible in the distance. The landscape is more than enough. You could spend hours watching the water change color, the boats glide by, and the mountains gently close the horizon.

Even on the plate, Chiemsee is present. I particularly enjoyed the idea of ​​"Chiemsee Sushi," prepared with fish from the lake: whitefish, pike-perch, or eel. A rather original way to experience the landscape. According to the region's gourmets, this is where you can find the best sushi and sashimi.

So, Das Achental or Chiemgauhof? Ultimately, the choice isn't so complicated. The first is for action-packed days, if you're so inclined: a round of golf, a visit to the spa, a fine meal, a stroll… The second invites you to slow down and enjoy the lake.

Two hotels, two atmospheres, but the same philosophy. And perhaps that, ultimately, is the true luxury in this beautiful corner of Bavaria: not having to chase after time. Letting it drift by gently, between the mountains, the lake, and a lovely meal.
