In 1886, Alcide Monmousseau founded a fine wine merchant business in Montrichard, Touraine. There, he acquired one of the largest "Tuffeau" quarries (a local stone). Abandoned after its use for the construction of the royal châteaux of the Loire Valley, this quarry provided him with excellent winemaking cellars: a 15 km network of underground galleries, sound and solid, where the temperature, summer and winter, remained a constant 12°C, with ideal humidity for winemaking and aging.
His nephew and successor at the head of the company, Justin-Marcel Monmousseau, discovered striking similarities in terroir between the vineyards of Champagne and those of Touraine. He succeeded in producing a Grand Vin using Dom Pérignon's method. By 1930, his sparkling wines were being distributed in Europe and the United States. The estate remained in the family until 1994. It then became part of the Ackermann group.
Monmouseau is one of the leading producers of sparkling wines made using the Traditional Method under the Touraine, vouvray and Crémant de Loire appellations.

The visit to this veritable labyrinth of tuffeau galleries is impressive: veritable tapestries of light offer an unprecedented vision of the great Loire castles, retracing the history and origin of the cellars.
